Silhouette is a term in hunting that refers to a 2D decoy. I was pretty happy with this piece in the end. I like that things feel busy, but it’s a fairly simple image overall. I also like how the plants mimic the zebra stripes and then the fan mimics them as well.

Breast Collar refers to a leather strap worn around the chest to secure hunting packs. Also refers to leather martingales used on pack horses.

This was a personal piece where I was experimenting with sanding on illustration board. I’m reposting this because I think I want to remind myself of what I like to make- I think I wandered a little to far during the last year stylistically. I want to get back to making simpler pictures with some good punchy colours. This piece was published in CMYK Magazine Vol.45, the redesign issue.

Strutzone 9”x12” Acrylic on wood panel and digital
Strutzone refers to a known area that target animals congregate to mate and hunters frequent. Wasn’t happy with how this picture turned out so I touched it up in photoshop. Still not a favourite, but it’s okay. NEXT!
Chase For Pleasure 9”x12” Acrylic on wood panel
A term that refers to fox hunting. I’m not too happy with this piece as a final image, but I did enjoy painting some of the details.

A term in hunting that refers to an animal that is afraid to reply to a hunter’s call due to heavy hunting pressure. I like that the image isn’t exclusive to dating, but rather avoiding the phone in general. Unusual color choices- more saturated that I normally work.

I want to try and get back to making things that look like this. I like that it has detail, but wasn’t overworked- something I’m struggling with at the moment.
Sweet Spot 9”x12” Acrylic on wood panel
This was the second piece I completed for my illustration thesis. Sweet Spot refers to the heart and lung area of an animal- this is where a hunter aims in order to ensure a quick and efficient kill. I was pretty happy with the mood of piece, but I wish that I had somehow made it say ‘hunting’ more. I guess the dagger tattoo was supposed to tie it back in, but I think I should have covered the guy in tattoos that made it more obvious. Nevertheless, I enjoy this one.
Caping 9”x12” acrylic on wood panel
This was the first of my thesis pieces. Caping is the process in hunting where the hunter removes the hide from the head and shoulders of the animal so that it can be mounted into a trophy. My thesis combined and compared dating/courtship to hunting terminology.
